Adult Education

Adult education and faith formation at EMC includes both weekly Bible study (Tuesdays at 10am) and topic-focused areas of special interest. Sessions are open to the public, and you’ll find an authentic, warm welcome at every activity!

Our Tuesday bible study gathers 10-12 people each week to look at the Bible text for the coming Sunday’s worship. We learn about the historical context and themes of a book (often using videos from BibleProject.com), then consider the messages of a given text for our current time. Discussions include personal anecdotes and laughter, leading us to consider the text more deeply in the days afterward. Using the Narrative Lectionary in Bible study and worship, we journey through a yearly cycle of Hebrew Bible texts in the fall, a Gospel in the winter, other early Christian texts in the spring, and other themes over the summer.

Throughout the year, we also offer short-term focused discussions in areas of broad community interest. These are weekly conversations based in a shared exploration of books or other media. Subjects cover a range of social and political ideas with religious import. Past conversations have included a series on racial justice films (summer 2020), Waking Up White by Debby Irving (Lent 2020), spiritual music of the band U2 (fall 2019) and The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams (Lent 2019).

Faith formation also happens by doing, so the EMC community of all ages participates in volunteer service through our mission partners, and meet up for monthly shared adventures through Front Porch Fridays. Visit Morningside U to see how the adults in our congregation have also provided free education ministry to each other and the community, with one-day courses aligned to their talents. We hope you’ll join in any of these opportunities to build connections, understanding and faith in the months ahead!
