Call for VEAP Volunteers

Our ministry partner VEAP, a food-shelf-and-more in Bloomington, recently sent out this request:

With many of our long-time volunteers unable to support us because of the pandemic and many of our new volunteers returning to work after furloughs, we are predicting a shortage of volunteer support in the coming months. Specifically, we are seeking volunteers to fill shifts from 11:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 2:15 – 5:15 p.m. Monday – Friday, October – March. Our opportunities comply with the Minnesota Department of Health’s current safety guidelines.

Charlie and Barb Green tend the east-side VEAP Garden.

Interested? You can sign up for volunteer shifts at the VEAP website.  If you have questions, feel free to contact members Barb or Charlie Green about their experience volunteering at VEAP on Fridays. Contact information for the Greens is available via the church office: (952) 926-6555‬ or emcucc@emcucc.org.

“Seeing Racism in Our Lives: Towards Abolition,” a film discussion series, begins Tuesday, June 30, with a discussion of “Just Mercy”, a powerful true story based on the bestselling book by Bryan Stevenson. The film is available to watch for free until the end of June.

Please watch the film on your own, then join us for a two-part discussion at 7:00pm on Tuesday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 7, led by Rev. Elaine Kirkland and Larry Williams.

The group will meet via Zoom to discuss five films over the course of ten weeks, using both large and small group formats for discussion. Stay tuned for additional titles coming soon.

The series is limited to 25 participants, so register in advance:

Race and identity are the topics of a new community book read hosted by Edina Morningside Church.

“Waking up White”, by Debby Irving, describes the author’s personal journey. Small groups are meeting to discuss the reading and its lessons through March.

A limited supply of books is available from the church for $15 each.

Contact the EMC office for information on the discussion sessions.

Taize

March 15 at 7 p.m. is our last Taize worship of the year! Our 30 minute, candlelit meditative service is followed by a simple soup supper.

Worship through Lent

During the five Lenten Sundays in March, we will focus on topics of racial justice.

March 1: “Awakening”

How Jesus prepared the disciples for God’s realm.

March 8: “Rethinking”

Jesus explains that the Son of Man came to serve, not to be served

March 15: “Relearning”

The author of “Waking up White” shares her work on racial justice, as we discuss Jesus’ view of taxes and the connection between property and people.

March 22: “Investing”

Scripture about a poor widow who gives away everything will be paired with a special offering to support humanitarian aid and development efforts.

March 29: “Becoming”

Jesus calls on his disciples to be watchful for signs of the end of the age.

The 2020 Morningside After Dark storytelling and live music series kicks off this month. Save the dates!

The shows will be 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on:

  • January 27
  • February 24
  • April 27

This month, six musicians and six writers explore the theme “Belonging”.

Join us as we turn EMC’s Fellowship Hall into an intimate coffeehouse setting with talented local artists and musicians.

Check out the Morningside After Dark Facebook page for more details!

Join us at EMC for carol singing and circle dancing on December 22. Bring a friend or a treat to share, if you like (but don’t worry, we’ll have some, too!).

We’ll be celebrating the season with music and fellowship starting at 4 p.m.

Best Ever Advent Calendar!

Advent_calendar_image

EMC has developed an Advent calendar that will allow everybody to share in the spirit of Christmas. This is a fun way to help people who really need it. The calendar assigns a grocery item for each day of Advent.  Purchased items may be brought to the church for collection and donation to VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, a metro food pantry). Copies of the printed calendar are available from the EMC office, or you can print them from the link below. There are several ways to participate:

  • Purchase all the items for a week and bring them to church each week.
  • Purchase all of the items for the month and bring them to church all at once.
  • Write a check for $50.00 (or $25 for a half-share) and donate it to VEAP through the church (Make the check to EMC and show VEAP in the memo space.)
  • Donate whatever food or money you are able.

We would like to collect everything and take it to VEAP by December 24th! Any questions? Please contact the EMC office.

Advent Workshop

Christmas-decorations

EMC is hosting an Advent Workshop on the afternoon of December 8th from 3-5pm. We welcome the neighborhood and congregation to our Fellowship Hall for an afternoon of crafting. Dreaming of snow globes and luminaries? Reindeer and elves? Houses made of sugar? Frosted sugar cookies? Celebrate this season of togetherness with conversation, smiles, and lots and lots of glue. Some projects may include a small supply fee.

Contact the EMC church office if you have questions or want to learn more!
