Mardis Gras 2018

EMC pulled out all the stops for Mardis Gras worship and a pancake breakfast — complete with music by the Dixiecats — on Sunday, Feb. 11. While middle-schoolers and high school students set the tables and cooked up sausages and pancakes, elementary school kids made prayer books that EMC missioners will bring to the Daylight School in Kenya this summer. All the funds raised by the breakfast also will be used for a Daylight School project.

EMC volunteers provided a Valentine’s-themed night during Families Moving Forward on Monday, Feb. 12. Attendees at Parkway UCC dug into the make-your-own tacos and then applied their creative skills to Valentine making; one girl created a “Caught Being Good” card for Laurie Cory, who made Rice Krispie treats. Valentine candy rounded out the evening’s dessert. And one girl finished the night by practicing very high fives with Pastor Oby.

Often the start of a new year sparks a resolution for more physical fitness. But what about our spiritual fitness? Come strengthen your spirit, your resilience and your sense of peace during our 2018 Lenten Series, Spiritual Cross Fit, led by Rev. Frank Bennett, Feb. 19 through March 19. Be renewed and gain greater insights into your faith and spiritual life.

Join us each Monday for supper at 6:15 p.m. Then we’ll spend our class session, 7–8 p.m., in the library.
Practices will include:
• Breath prayer
• Gospel imagination and contemplation
• Lectio Divina (reading and reflection)
• Centering prayer

Our March 12, a special class will focus on Sacred Intuition, and our capstone experience will be held on Palm Sunday, March 25, 12:30–4:30 p.m.

Throw on your Mardis Gras beads and masks for worship — then join the hungry crowd in Fellowship Hall for a traditional pre-Lenten feast of pancakes and sausage on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. Cooking up the breakfast will be our youth, grades 6–12, and the folks who plan to visit Daylight School in Kenya this summer. Gary Lundgren’s Dixieland jazz band will be back, providing the tunes. Tickets are $5 per plate and all donations are welcome; funds raised will be used to pay for project materials at Daylight.

Thanks to EMC members Pam, Pam, Laurie and Mary for providing a birthday lunch—complete with taco salads and a personalized birthday cake—for more than a dozen residents, including the two birthday guests, of 66 West.  “Your positive energy, expert lunch skills and good humor made for a very delightful afternoon,” wrote Christina Giese, director of volunteer engagement. This EMC group plans to repeat their volunteerism in the coming months at this apartment complex for young adults who have experienced homelessness.
